What are Soapnuts?
Soapnuts are not really nuts but the fruit from the soapnut tree which grows wild in India. The fruit is encased in a firm outer shell, and when the fruit ripens it falls from the tree. The ripened fruit is harvested and cracked open to naturally dry in the sun, producing a dark golden 'shell'.
How do they work?
These shells contain a very high percentage of saponins (Mother Nature's soap), a surfactant which removes dirt and oils from clothing when contacted with water. Soapnuts can also be boiled into a liquid concentrate and used as a general purpose cleaner, shampoo, hand soap, pet wash and in the garden.
Save money as well as the environment
A 500g bag should wash 200 loads, or 7-10 loads per week for around 6 months. Assuming 200 washes, it equates to 11c a wash, which is 50-70% less than commercial laundry detergent. Being a natural, biodegradable product, they are an eco-friendly alternative to commercial detergents containing chemicals.
